# Tennis Elbow and Leech Therapy: A Clinical Experience with Ayurvedic Treatment
Tennis elbow can cause persistent pain around the outer side of the elbow and may make routine activities such as lifting objects, working at a desk, gripping, or using the hand uncomfortable.
Recently, a 32-year-old IT professional consulted us with complaints of tennis elbow. He had been experiencing persistent elbow pain and had already consulted for modern medical treatment.
When he visited, one of his first questions was:
“Doctor, is there any treatment for tennis elbow in Ayurveda?”
He was concerned because he had not received satisfactory relief from his previous treatment and was looking for another approach.
## Our Ayurvedic Approach
After assessing his condition, an Ayurvedic treatment plan was advised. The main procedure selected for him was Leech Therapy (Jalaukavacharana) along with Ayurvedic medicines.
The plan included:
- Leech Therapy sessions at approximately 15-day intervals
- Ayurvedic medicines as advised
- Regular assessment of pain and improvement
## Improvement After Leech Therapy
After the first Leech Therapy session, the patient reported a noticeable reduction in his elbow pain.
As treatment continued, his symptoms progressively improved.
After completing three sessions of Leech Therapy, he reported that his pain had resolved and he was able to perform his routine activities without the previous discomfort.
## Why This Case Was Interesting
The patient initially came to us mainly because he wanted to know whether Ayurveda had an option for his persistent tennis elbow.
Seeing his symptoms improve progressively during the treatment was encouraging, particularly because he had been worried about needing more invasive treatment.
This clinical experience also demonstrates how procedures such as Jalaukavacharana (Leech Therapy) may be considered as part of an individualized Ayurvedic management plan in selected musculoskeletal conditions.
### Important Note
This article describes an individual clinical experience and should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every case of tennis elbow will respond in the same way. Treatment selection and outcomes depend on the severity, duration, underlying cause, examination findings, and individual patient factors. Proper clinical evaluation is recommended before treatment.
