The thyroid is a small gland in the neck that controls how fast the body uses energy. Thyroid problems are common in India, especially in women.
Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
Tiredness, weight gain, feeling cold, dry skin, hair fall, constipation, heavy periods and low mood.
Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
Weight loss despite a good appetite, a racing heartbeat, sweating, shaking hands, anxiety and loose motions.
Tests
A TSH blood test is the usual first step, often with T3 and T4. Women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy should get it checked, because thyroid levels affect the baby.
If you take a thyroid tablet
- Take it every morning on an empty stomach, with water, 30 to 60 minutes before tea or breakfast
- Don't stop or change the dose on your own, even if you feel well
- Repeat TSH as your doctor advises, usually every 6 to 12 months once stable
Stopping thyroxine can bring all the symptoms back and, in pregnancy, can harm the baby.
