Recurrent UTIs: Why They Keep Coming Back

Feb 28, 2026

A urinary tract infection (UTI) causes burning while passing urine, needing to go often, and lower abdominal discomfort. It is much more common in women. Some women get UTIs again and again, which is called recurrent UTI when it happens two or more times in six months.

See a doctor the same day if

  • there is fever, chills or pain in the back or side
  • there is vomiting or blood in the urine
  • you are pregnant
  • the patient is a man or a child

These can mean the infection has reached the kidneys or needs closer checking.

Tests that help

A urine routine test and a urine culture show whether there is an infection and which antibiotic will work. If antibiotics are prescribed, finish the full course. For repeated UTIs, an ultrasound and a blood sugar test can find a cause such as stones or diabetes.

Why UTIs keep coming back

  • Drinking too little water, especially in summer
  • Holding urine for long hours
  • Constipation
  • Diabetes
  • Changes after menopause

Prevention tips

  • Drink enough water to keep your urine pale
  • Don't hold urine for long
  • Pass urine after intercourse
  • Wipe front to back and wear cotton underwear
