24-hour Holter Monitoring

24-hour Holter monitoring is a non-invasive diagnostic test that continuously records the electrical activity of the heart over a full 24-hour period. This test is especially useful for detecting irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias), unexplained fainting spells, palpitations, and evaluating the effectiveness of heart medications or pacemakers.

During the test, a small portable device called a Holter monitor is attached to the patient using several electrodes placed on the chest. The monitor records the heart’s activity as the patient goes about their daily routine, providing valuable information that may not be captured during a standard ECG (electrocardiogram), which records for only a few seconds.

The data collected is later analyzed by a cardiologist to assess the heart’s rhythm and detect any abnormalities. Unlike an ECG done in a clinic, Holter monitoring gives a more comprehensive view of how the heart functions throughout the day and night, during various activities, rest, and even sleep.

This test is painless, safe, and easy to use, making it an essential tool in diagnosing cardiac conditions that are sporadic or short-lived but could have serious health implications if left untreated.
