If you're in Coimbatore and looking for a guitar — whether you're picking one up for the first time or upgrading after years of playing — here's what to look for in a shop and what to expect when you walk in.
What a good guitar shop should offer
Stock across price ranges — not just budget entry-level guitars and not just expensive ones. A good shop carries ₹4,000 acoustic guitars for first-timers and ₹70,000+ guitars for players who know what they want.
Brands you can trust — Yamaha, Fender, Mantic, Cort, Ibanez, Juárez, Granada are common names in Indian music retail. Ask what brands the shop stocks before visiting.
The ability to try before you buy — any shop worth visiting will let you play the guitar before purchasing. If they don't, walk out.
Accessories in stock — strings, picks, capos, tuners, straps, gig bags, and guitar stands should all be available. A shop that only sells guitars and nothing else isn't set up for your long-term needs.
Repair and setup service — guitars need occasional action adjustments, string changes, and tuning peg replacements. A shop that also handles basic repairs is far more useful than one that only sells.
Types of guitars and who they're for
No amplifier needed. The starting point for most beginners in India — especially for film songs, Bollywood, folk, and basic chord playing. Easier to maintain than electric, no extra equipment required.
Good for: complete beginners, singers who self-accompany, players who want portability.
Nylon strings instead of steel — softer on fingers, easier to press for beginners. Used for classical music, fingerstyle, and Carnatic-influenced playing. Slightly different Sounding and technique from steel-string acoustic.
Good for: beginners who want a softer sound, classical or fingerstyle players, children starting young.
Requires an amplifier. Smaller body, thinner strings, easier action — actually easier to press than acoustic in many cases. The sound depends heavily on the amp and Sound effects you use.
Good for: rock, blues, metal, jazz, anyone interested in sound experimentation. Not ideal as a first guitar or beginners, unless you're committed to a specific genre that requires it.
Works plugged in or unplugged. Popular for jazz and blues. A middle ground between acoustic warmth and electric versatility.
Good for: intermediate to advanced players exploring jazz, blues, or Indian classical fusion.
Bass Guitar is the backbone of any song. Four strings, lower tuning, provides the rhythm foundation in a band. Often overlooked by beginners but in high demand — good bass players are always needed.
Good for: anyone interested in band playing, rhythm-focused musicians.
Beginner guitars worth considering in India (2026)
**Yamaha F280 Acoustic — ₹7,000 to ₹9,000**
The most trusted beginner acoustic guitar in India. Steel strings, spruce top, consistent build quality across units. Easy to find, easy to maintain, holds tuning reasonably well for a starter guitar. If someone asks us what to buy for a first acoustic, this is what we recommend most often.
**Cort AD810 Acoustic — ₹8,000 to ₹10,000**
Solid dreadnought build, good projection, comfortable to play. A step above the Yamaha F280 in sound quality and build — worth the extra spend if you're serious about continuing.
**Fender Squier Stratocaster (Electric) — ₹14,000 to ₹18,000**
The entry point into Fender's electric guitar range. Squier is Fender's student brand — same body shape as a full Fender Stratocaster but at a fraction of the price. Reliable, well-built for the price, good resale value.
**Ibanez GIO Series (Electric) — ₹12,000 to ₹16,000**
Popular among beginners interested in rock and metal. Thinner neck than a Strat — easier for smaller hands. Ibanez makes some of the most playable beginner electric guitars in this price range.
**Yamaha C40 Classical — ₹6,500 to ₹8,000**
Nylon string classical guitar, consistent build quality, recommended for beginners going the classical or fingerstyle route. Good for children and adults both.
Professionals have different requirements — specific tonewoods, hardware quality, pickup systems for live performance, and playability that holds up under daily use.
At Music Zone, we stock guitars suited for serious players — including models from Fender, Gibson, Taylor, and other professional-grade brands. If you're looking for a stage-ready instrument or a studio guitar with a specific tonal character, come in and talk to us. We'll show you what we have and let you spend time with the instruments.
Professional guitars are a significant investment. The right approach is always to try multiple options across a price range, not to buy blind based on a spec sheet.
What to buy along with your guitar
**Strings** — carry a spare set from day one. Strings break. A standard set of steel strings costs ₹150 to ₹400 depending on brand and gauge. D'Addario, Elixir, and Ernie Ball are reliable choices.
**Picks** — buy a variety pack to start. Thin picks for strumming, medium for general use, thick for precise single-note playing. Costs almost nothing.
**Tuner** — a clip-on tuner (₹300 to ₹500) or a tuning app works fine for beginners. An out-of-tune guitar makes learning harder and sounds discouraging.
**Capo** — essential if you want to play along with songs in different keys. A decent capo costs ₹300 to ₹600.
**Strap** — if you plan to stand while playing. Strap locks are a good addition for electric guitars.
**Gig bag or hard case** — protects the guitar from humidity, dust, and knocks. A basic gig bag comes with many beginner guitars — if yours doesn't, buy one separately.
**Amplifier (for electric guitar)** — a small practice amp (10W to 15W) is enough for home use. Fender Frontman, Roland Micro Cube, and Laney are good options at the practice amp level.
