If you're expecting a baby in Udaipur, the season your baby arrives in matters more than most parents expect. A newborn born in May needs a very different wardrobe from one born in January. This guide walks through what each Udaipur season means for your baby's clothes and daily care.

Summers in Udaipur are hot and dry, with temperatures commonly around 40°C and sometimes higher. The monsoon runs from roughly June to September, with the heaviest rain in July and August and noticeably higher humidity. From October to February the weather turns dry and cooler, with warm sunny days and cool nights, and January is typically the coldest month, with night-time lows averaging around 9°C.

For a newborn, this means three different challenges: keeping cool, staying dry, and staying warm at night.

Summer: keeping a newborn cool

What to dress your baby in. Light, loose, soft clothing, usually a single thin layer indoors. A simple romper like our Baby Romper, at ₹235, is easy to wear on its own in warm weather.

How to spot overheating. Feel the back of your baby's neck or tummy. If it feels hot or sweaty, or your baby is flushed and fussy, remove a layer and move to a cooler spot. Cool hands and feet are normal, so they aren't a good guide.

Other summer habits.

• Keep your baby out of direct sun and the midday heat.
• Keep the room comfortably cool, but avoid pointing a fan or cooler directly at your baby.
• Ask your paediatrician about feeding in hot weather. Young babies usually get all their fluids from breast milk or formula, so don't add anything without medical advice.

Monsoon: keeping a newborn dry and comfortable

Humidity is the main issue during the rains. Clothes take longer to dry, skin folds stay damp, and babies can get uncomfortable rashes.

• Have plenty of spare sets. Damp weather means clothes may not dry as fast as you expect, so having extra clean, fully dry outfits on hand helps.
• Never dress your baby in damp clothes. Make sure everything is completely dry first.
• Change wet or sweaty clothes promptly.
• Dry your baby's skin folds carefully after a bath, around the neck, underarms and groin.
• Keep the room ventilated, and avoid drying wet clothes in the same small room where your baby sleeps.

Winter: warm layers for cool nights

Summer baby. Several light rompers and soft cloths, plus something warmer for air-conditioned rooms. Buy fewer heavy items.

Monsoon baby. More spare sets than you think you need, because of slow drying, and a routine that keeps your baby's skin dry.

Winter baby. A few soft base layers, one or two warm outer layers, and warm clothing for early mornings and evenings.

Whatever the season, buy one or two sets in the smallest size and a few in the next size up, since newborns grow fast.

Everyday care that doesn't change with the season
