Restorative procedures in Dentistry

Restorative dental procedures such as crowns and bridges are vital for repairing damaged teeth and restoring proper function and aesthetics to the mouth.

Crowns, also known as dental caps, are custom-made covers that fit over individual teeth to restore their shape, size, strength, and appearance. They are commonly used to repair teeth that have been significantly damaged by decay, trauma, or extensive wear. Crowns can also be used to strengthen and protect weak teeth, cover dental implants, or support dental bridges.

The process of getting a dental crown typically involves two appointments. During the first visit, the dentist prepares the affected tooth by removing any decayed or damaged tissue and reshaping it to accommodate the crown. Impressions or digital scans of the prepared tooth are then taken to create a custom-made crown that matches the color, size, and shape of the natural tooth. A temporary crown may be placed over the tooth to protect it while the permanent crown is being fabricated.

Once the permanent crown is ready, usually within a few weeks, the patient returns for the second appointment. The temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is cemented or bonded into place, restoring the tooth's function and appearance.

Bridges are another type of restorative dental prosthetic used to replace one or more missing teeth. Unlike dentures, which are removable, bridges are fixed in place and are anchored to adjacent natural teeth or dental implants for support. The artificial teeth, known as pontics, are attached to crowns placed on the neighboring teeth, called abutments, or to dental implants surgically placed in the jawbone.

Bridges are custom-made to match the color, shape, and size of the natural teeth for a seamless appearance. They not only fill the gaps left by missing teeth but also prevent adjacent teeth from shifting out of position and help maintain proper alignment and bite function.

Both crowns and bridges are durable, long-lasting restorations that can significantly improve the strength, function, and aesthetics of the smile. With proper care and maintenance, they can provide years of reliable service, restoring confidence and oral health to patients with damaged or missing teeth.
