Why ACs Are Priced Differently From Other Scrap

Unlike a pile of loose metal, an AC unit is made of several materials at once: copper coils and tubing, aluminium fins, a compressor with mixed metal content, and a steel or plastic outer casing. The value comes mostly from the copper and aluminium content, which is why AC scrap is priced as its own category rather than folded into general iron or aluminium rates. Window ACs, split ACs, and commercial units all contain different proportions of copper and aluminium, so the final price can vary by unit type and condition. A unit with an intact copper coil is generally worth more than one that's been stripped or damaged.

• Compressor condition — an intact compressor is worth more than a burnt-out one
