Matrimonial cases

A matrimonial case is a legal dispute between married people, and can include issues such as:
Divorce, Separation, Annulment, Child custody, Property division, and Spousal support.
Matrimonial cases are usually resolved in family courts. The legal process can include:
  • Filing a petition in the family court
  • Counseling sessions for divorce by mutual consent
  • Detailed legal proceedings for contested cases
Here are some things to consider when filing a matrimonial case:
  • Forms: You can get the required forms from the court, including the divorce petition affidavit and other supporting documents.
  • Supporting documents: You may need to attach supporting documents such as marriage certificates, proof of residence, and photographs.
  • Filing fee: The filing fee depends on the nature of the case and the relief sought.
The Supreme Court has advised that going to the police should be the last resort in matrimonial disputes.
