The Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET), conducted by CBSE, is the qualifying exam for teaching in central government schools, and many state and private schools also ask for it. Which paper should you take?

• Paper 1 is for those who want to teach Classes 1 to 5.
• Paper 2 is for those who want to teach Classes 6 to 8.
• Take both if you want to keep Classes 1 to 8 open.

What the exam looks like
Both papers have 150 multiple-choice questions, 150 marks and 2.5 hours. Each correct answer earns 1 mark, and there is no negative marking. To qualify you need 60%, which is 90 out of 150 for the general category.

Paper 1 has five sections of 30 questions each: Child Development and Pedagogy, Language I, Language II, Mathematics and Environmental Studies. Paper 2 has the first three, plus 60 questions of either Mathematics and Science or Social Studies, depending on the subject you want to teach.

What this means for your preparation

• Child Development and Pedagogy is worth 30 marks in both papers, so it pays to master it early.
• With no negative marking, you should attempt every question.
• 150 questions in 150 minutes leaves about a minute per question, so timed practice matters.
