RRB NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) fills clerical and supervisory posts in Indian Railways. There are two levels. Graduate-level posts include Station Master, Goods Train Manager and Chief Commercial-cum-Ticket Supervisor. Undergraduate-level posts include Commercial-cum-Ticket Clerk, Account Clerk-cum-Typist and Trains Clerk.

How the exam works

• CBT 1 (first stage) has 100 questions, 100 marks and 90 minutes: General Awareness (40), Mathematics (30) and Reasoning (30). It is a screening round.
• CBT 2 (second stage) has 120 questions in 90 minutes. It is at a higher level and decides your merit.
• After that, some posts need a Typing Skill Test or a Computer Based Aptitude Test (for Station Master), then document verification.
• Every wrong answer costs one-third of a mark.

What this means for your preparation

• General Awareness is 40 of the 100 marks in CBT 1, so daily current-affairs reading is worth the time.
• 100 questions in 90 minutes gives you about 54 seconds per question. With a negative mark, guessing blindly costs you.
• Practise Maths and Reasoning against the clock, not only for accuracy.
